The purpose of this project is to help our community to strengthen the bonds across different generations within our Romanian community here in Las Vegas and propel our efforts towards winning the prestigious Romanian American National Heritage Award.

This project is designed to create meaningful interactions between our teenagers, college students, RUF young members and the senior members of our community. By doing so, we not only preserve but also celebrate the rich Romanian culture and traditions that are alive in the U.S.

Participants

  • Teenagers: High school students aged 14–18 who are committed to engaging with our community and learning from older generations.

  • College Students: Energetic and motivated UNLV students from the Romanian Student Association who will mentor and lead various cultural and social activities.

  • Seniors: Our respected elderly community members who seek companionship and assistance, or who wish to offer guidance and share their invaluable wisdom and experiences.

  • RUF Members: Dedicated volunteers who will support the program in various capacities, ensuring the smooth running of the project and securing funding.

Goals Our goals are twofold:

  1. To foster closer relationships between generations, allowing for cultural exchange and mutual learning.

  2. To collectively work towards earning the Romanian American National Heritage Award by showcasing our community’s dedication to maintaining and enriching our cultural heritage.

Activities The activities planned will range from cultural workshops, storytelling sessions, and traditional cooking classes to joint community service projects. These activities are designed to not only be enjoyable but also educational, promoting cultural transmission and understanding across ages.

 

Award Preparation Support:

Guide high school students in documenting their contributions. Provide mentorship to write essay and craft compelling applications for the Romanian American National Heritage Award. 

 

Students RSA at UNLV: Recruit and lead student volunteers. Facilitate mentorship and youth leadership activities.

Las Vegas RUF Chapter: Connect with seniors and assess their needs. Train high school participants in program activities. Oversee program success and promote community engagement.

 

Expected Outcomes

*High school participants well-prepared for the Romanian American National Heritage Award applications.

 

Through this project, we hope to strengthen intergenerational bonds, support seniors in need, and increase our youth’s interest in their Romanian heritage, through meaningful community engagement. By fostering leadership and teamwork, the project will create lasting benefits for participants and the broader Romanian-American community.  This is an also an opportunity for our seniors (members of our community) to contribute to shaping the new generation, and to leave as legacy traditional Romanian values.
